AVIATION/ MULTIPLE BIRD STRIKES AT SMF


3 airliners experienced bird strikes within a span of 9 hours at Sacramento, California, on Tuesday, January 5. The 1st incident involved a SOUTHWEST AIRLINES Boeing 737. SW Flight 549, arriving from Ontario, California, suffered a bird strike to its nose while descending thru 1300 feet. The aircraft landed without incident. Post flight inspection revealed no damage and the aircraft returned to service. The 2nd incident took place about 50 minutes later and also involved a Southwest Boeing 737. SW Flight 2217, on service to Las Vegas, Nevada, suffered a bird strike to its windscreen while climbing thru 500 feet. The crew returned to Sacramento, where the 737 landed without incident. The windshield wipers were replaced and the aircraft cleared to resume its journey. The 3rd incident occurred about 8 hours later and involved a HAWAIIAN AIRLINES Boeing 767. Hawaiian Flight 20, arriving from Honolulu, Hawaii, struck a bird while on final approach. The 767 landed without incident. Post flight inspection revealed no damage to the aircraft.
