AVIATION/ DOOR FORCES CONTINENTAL 777 RETURN
An unusual problem with a door forced a CONTINENTAL AIRLINES Boeing 777 to return to Tokyo, Japan, on Tuesday, January 5. Flight 8 was on International Service from Tokyo to Newark, New Jersey, with 300 passengers and crew onboard. According to media reports, about 90 minutes after departure, a Flight Attendant noticed something fluttering outside 1 of the aircrafts doors. Upon notification, the Captain decided to return to Tokyo Narita Airport, where the 777 landed without incident, about 3.5 hours after its original departure. Post flight inspection revealed that the fluttering object was a neck strap, usually used by ground staff. The strap had become entangled in the door hatch. The 777 was later cleared to resume its journey to Newark, where they later landed without incident 17 hours late.
