AVIATION/ DRC UPDATES ON CAA 727 CRASH LANDING
The Democratic Republic of Congo's Directorate of Civil Aviation released a brief update on the accident invovling a COMPAGNIE AFRICAINE AVIATION Boeing 727 at Kinshasa on January 2. On that date, the CAA 727 was on Scheduled Cargo Service from Kinshasa to Kananga, DRC, when it suffered a hydraulics failure on takeoff from Kinshasa in heavy rain. The crew declared an emergency and requested immediate return. Upon touching down on the runway, with visible standing water, the 727 slid down the runway and veered left off the runway. The 727 came to rest in soft ground. No one onboard was injured, however the aircraft suffered substantial damages and has been written off. The Directorate said yesterday that the hydraulics leak was severe enough to affect the brakes. The Captain decided to return to Kinshasa due to its longer runway, versus continuing on to Kananga. The Directorate said that upon touchdown, the crew could not stop the aircraft due to the failure of the brakes. The left hand main gear then seperated from the aircraft which caused it to veer left off the runway. The right hand main gear then collapsed, which also caused the nose gear to seperate. The investigation continues.
