AVIATION/ HOKKAIDO SAAB IN NEAR DISASTER IN OKUSHIRI
Japanese aviation officials have launched a full investigation into what they term a "very serious incident,". that was just made public late on Friday. On Saturday, June 4, HOKKAIDO AIR SYSTEM Flight 2891, a Saab 340B on Domestic Service from Hakodate to Okushiri, Japan, with 10 passengers and 3 crew members onboard, had difficulty in landing in Okushiri. The crew was on approach to Okushiri in poor weather, when the ground proximity warning system called minimums, which prompted the crew to go-around. The Saab safely landed on its 2nd approach. The carrier said Friday that both engines had been operated above over torque limits during the go-around. The incident was rated as serious and reported to the Japanese Transportation Safety Board (JTSB). Japan's Ministry of Transport said the Saab apparently descended to 100 feet, before steeply climbing. The FDR has been downloaded, however the CVR has already been overwritten.
