AVIATION/ ZEPPELIN CATCHES FIRE AND CRASHES IN GERMANY
The Pilot of a LIGHTSHIP EUROPE Zeppelin was killed and 3 passengers had to jump to safety when the aircraft caught fire and crashed in Germany on Sunday. The accident happened at the Reichelsheim aerodrome, near Friedberg in central Germany as the GOODYEAR Zeppelin was coming in to land. About 2 metres from the ground, a small fire apparently broke out and the Pilot told his 3 passengers, all journalists, to jump to the ground, while he tried to land safely. Once the 3 journalists evacuated the Zeppelin, it climbed back up to 40 metres, perhaps due to the loss of weight of the passengers, and then burst into flames. Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise from the engine and smelling petrol fumes. The Zeppelin had been making a promotional flight to mark a local festival. Germany's Federal Office of Accident Investigation has launched a probe into the accident.
