AVIATION/ FUMES IMPAIR THOSE ONBOARD TUIFLY 737

A TUILY Boeing 737 had to make an emergency return to Alicante, Spain, on March 15, 2011, after a somewhat mysterious incidend occurred while on its initial climb. The incident was just made public today. On March 15, Flight 8957 was on Charter Service from Alicante, Spain, to Nuremburg, Germany, with 144 passengers and crew onboard. While climbing thru 10000 feet, about 10 miles from the Alicante Airport, the crew requested return. The Captain, First Officier and Cabin Crew all were reporting feeling impaired, with dizziness present. The Captain reported that "everything went black for a moment". The 737, registration D-ATUG and pictured above, landed safely back in Alicante, about 25 minutes after its initial departure. Once on the ground, passengers reported feeling dizzy immediately after a ground power unit started the engines. Once airborne, passengers reported feelings of dizziness, confusion and slow movements. The crew also reported similiar symptoms. The German BFU reported in their March Bulletin today that shortly after takeoff there were conspicuous and unusual bodily symptoms. The crew then returned to Alicante. The BFU said that the event had been reported to the BFU on March 15 as a cabin pressure event, however during investigation the BFU learned however that oil fumes had been observed onboard of the aircraft, which most likely led to the impairments. In a brief statement, Spain's CIAIAC said they are not investigating the occurrence.
