AVIATION/ CENTRAL AMERICAN L410 CRASHES IN HONDURAS

All 14 passengers and crew onboard a CENTRAL AMERICAN AIRWAYS Let 410 were killed this morning when it crashed on approach in dense fog to Toncontin International Airport in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. CAA Flight 731 was on Domestic Service from San Pedro Sula to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, with 12 passengers and 2 Pilots onboard. According to media reports, at 8:02am, the Let 410 impacted trees on the side of a mountain at 2000 feet, near the village of Cerro de Hula, which is located near the approach path to runway 02 at Tegucigalpa. 13 of the 14 people onboard were declared dead on the scene and the Co-Pilot died on the way to hospital. Among those onboard, was a Honduras government vice minister and a former finance minister. Media reports say that 3 Americans were onboard, but this has not yet been confirmed. Honduran aviation officials refused to speculate on a cause, but did say that weather may have been a factor. The last communication with the Pilots reportedly was routine. The Let 410 that crashed, registration HR-AUQ, is pictured above, as are pictures from the scene of the crash. On a side note, on October 21, 1989, a TAN Boeing 727, on service from Managua, Nicaragua, to Telgucigalpa, crashed in nearly the same spot while on approach to what was then  runway 01.
