AVIATION/ SABANG MERAUKE CASA AVIOCAR CRASHES
All 5 crew members onboard a SABANG MERAUKE RAYA AIR CHARTER Casa Aviocar 212 were killed when the plane crashed on Bintan Island, Indonesia, while on a Test Flight. The Aviocar, registration PK-ZAI pictured above, had just had an engine replaced at Batam Airport, and departed Batam at 1:19pm for the Test Flight with 2 Pilots and 3 technicians onboard. The Aviocar was headed towards Tanjung Pinang Airport and at 1:41pm, the Pilots made contact with Tanjung Pinang approach. Moments later, the aircraft disappeared from radar. The wreckage was located shortly thereafter, impacted into mud near Malang Meetings Village, about 15 miles from the destination Airport. According to media reports, all 5 crew members were found deceased. Local residents said there was no explosion, however they described the Aviocar as "striking the ground with a rush". Local media also reported that the Captain of the Test Flight was highly experienced and had previously been a Pilot for both BATAVIA and the now defunct ADAM AIR. Indonesian aviation officials have opened an investigation into the crash.
