WORLD NEWS/ IGOR ROARS BY BERMUDA
Hurricane Igor is moving away from Bermuda today, after pounding the Island with winds as high as 93mph. A Bermuda Police Service spokesman Dwayne said no major damages, injuries or deaths, have been reported as a result of the storm that started showing its presence on the Island on Saturday. However, the spokesman did say considerable damage to the electricity distribution system Island-wide. The core of Category 1 Hurricane Igor passed approximately 40 miles W of Bermuda last night around 11:00pm. The storm is currently located 275 miles N/NE of Bermuda and is moving to the N/NE at 24mph. Winds are at 75mph, with gusts to 85mph. Igor should be downgraded to a Tropical Storm later today. The storm is now headed out to sea, but will pass close enough to SE Newfoundland to bring Tropical Storm force winds there tomorrow night. Rainfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches are possible for the capital of St. Johns. Hurricane Igor is blamed for 2 deaths, 1 in Puerto Rico and 1 in St Croix. Elsewhere in the Atlantic, Invest 94L continues to show circulation and could become a Tropical Depression tomorrow. In Asia, Typhoon Fanapi made landfall in mainland China about 150 miles E/NE of Hong Kong this morning as a Category 1 storm with 75mph winds. Fanapi was the strongest typhoon so far this season, peaking at Category 3 strength with 120mph winds. Fanapi killed 3 people in Taiwan. Taipei 101, the 2nd tallest building in the world with more than 100 stories, reportedly swayed some 15 cm in Fanapi's winds.
