WORLD NEWS/ HURRICANE KARL NEARS LANDFALL
The trio of Atlantic Hurricanes are still active today with a dangerous Hurricane Karl about to make landfall and a Hurricane Igor aiming for Bermuda. The trio, which are shown above earlier today, also includes the weakening Hurricane Julia, which is not a threat to land. The center of Hurricane Karl is forecast to make landfall this afternoon along the Gulf Coast of Mexico. Hurricane Warnings are up for 185 miles of the Mexican Coastline. Karl has intensified greatly over the last 24 hours and is currently a Category 3 Hurricane. Karl is the 1st major hurricane on record in the Gulf of Mexico's Bay of Campeche, the region bounded by the Yucatan Peninsula on the east. Given that the Bay of Campeche coast has never experienced a hurricane as strong as Karl, its impact is likely to cause unprecedented damage to a 50-mile wide coastal area between Veracruz and Poza Rica, Mexico. Hurricane Karl is currently located 25 miles NE of Veracruz, Mexico, and is moving W at 8mph. Winds are at 120mph, with gusts to 150mph. Once Karl does move ashore, the storm should rapidly begin to weaken. Hurricane Igor has weakened into a Category 3 storm, but is still a powerful Hurricane. Current forecast have the storm moving over or very close to Bermuda late on Sunday as a Category 2 or 3 Hurricane. A Hurricane Watch has now been posted for Bermuda. Igor is similar in strength and projected track to Hurricane Fabian of 2003. Fabian hit Bermuda as a Category 3 hurricane with 120mph winds. It was the most damaging hurricane ever to hit the island, with $355 million in damage. Fabian's storm surge killed 4 people crossing a causeway on the island. These were the 1st hurricane deaths on Bermuda since 1926. Hurricane Igor is currently located 695 miles S/SE of Bermuda, and is moving NW at 9mph. Winds are at 120mph, with gusts to 150mph. Further out in the Atlantic is the weakening Hurricane Julia. The Category 1 storm is located 1500 miles SW of The Azores and is moving W/NW at 19mph. Winds are at 85mph, with gusts to 105mph. Julia shoud weaken into a Tropical Storm later today and is no threat to any land mass.
