AVIATION/ AIR NELSON DASH IN NZ LANDING ACCIDENT

None of the Passengers and crew onboard an AIR NELSON Dash 8-300 were injured when the aircraft suffered a collapse of its nose gear upon landing today in Blenheim, New Zealand. Flight 8441 was on Domestic Service on behalf of AIR NEW ZEALAND from Wellington to Nelson, New Zealand, with 46 passengers and 3 crew members onboard. According to media reports, the weather was poor in Nelson as Flight 8441 approached. The crew attempted several approaches into Nelson over 90 minutes, but ended up requesting diversion to Blenheim. It has not yet been confirmed if the crew onboard the Dash knew if there was a problem with the landing gear. However, multiple media reports say that the aircraft circled the runway at Blenheim at a low altitude more than once and that Emergency Services were deployed prior to the aircraft coming in for a landing. Upon touchdown at 5:05pm, local time, the nose gear collapsed and the aicraft quickly came to a stop. The Dash will undergo a full damage assessment. Aviation officials in New Zealand have opened an investigation.
