AVIATION/ JAZZ CRJ ENCOUNTERS WAKE TURBULENCE

The Canadian TSB has reported a wake turbulence incident involving an AIR CANADA JAZZ CRJ700 and an AIR CHINA Boeing 747. On September 20, AC Jazz Flight 8531 was on Domestic Service from Toronto to Thunder Bay, ON, Canada, with 72 passengers and crew onboard. While enroute at 34000 feet, the crew was advised of traffic in the opposite direction at 35000 feet, which was the Air China 747 enroute to New York JFK. According to the Canadian TSB, about 1 minute after the 2 aircraft passed each other, the crew of the CRJ reported significant wake turbulence. The aircraft lost about 100 feet of altitude and encountered an uncommanded roll of 51 degrees. The crew was able to regain control and continue on to Thunder Bay without further incident.
