AVIATION/ WINDJET A319 TOUCHED DOWN SHORT OF RUNWAY
The Italian ANSV reported last evening that the WINDJET A319 that was involved in a landing accident at Palermo on Friday evening, impacted the ground violently, short of the threshold of runway 07. The ANSV also reported that both black boxes have been recovered. The Pilot of the A319 is quoted as saying that he felt the aircraft "sinking" while on final approach. Intial reports suggested that the aircraft veered off the runway after landing due to windshear. Although officials say that the aircraft landed short of the runway, they did say that windshear is still being looked at as one of the possible causes of the accident, along with other weather factors. An ALITALIA Pilot reported that while waiting to takeoff, he could not see the Windjet plane coming in for a landing due to the rain. Heavy thunderstorms were taking place when Flight 243, on Domestic Service from Rome, with 123 passengers and 6 crew members onboard, touched down at 8:13pm. Media reports from Palermo today say that a total of 34 people were injured in the incident, with only 6 of the requiring hospitalization. None of the injuries are said to be life threatening. The accident took out the glidescope antenna at the Palermo Airport. It will take at least 3 weeks for the ILS to be repaired.
