AVIATION/ NO INJURIES IN MERPATI INCIDENT
None of the 94 passengers and crew onboard a MERPATI NUSANTARA Fokker 100 were injured when the aircraft had to make an emergency landing in Kupang, Indonesia, last evening. Merpati Flight 5840 was on Domestic Service from Ujung Pandang to Kupang, with 88 passengers and 6 crew members onboard, when the incident took place. According to media reports, the crew of Flight 5840 had to abandon their 1st approach into Kupang when they received an unsafe indication for the left hand main gear. The crew entered a holding pattern to troubleshoot the problem, but reported that they were unable to fully extend the gear. They then performed a low fly over the tower, who confirmed that the left hand main gear was not fully extended. Unable to fix the problem, the crew landed with the gear not fully extended. The Fokker was brought to a stop about 1850 meters past the runway threshold, and the crew then ordered an evacuation. No one onboard was injured during the evacuation. The aircraft has sustained some damage, the extent of which is not known. It has been removed from service for a full damage assessment. Kupang Aiport was closed due to the incident, and only re-opened earlier today. The closure of the Airport indirectly led to the incident involving a BATAVIA AIR Boeing 737 today, which is described in a seperate posting today.
