AVIATION/ GAZPROMAVIA MI-117 CRASHES AT VORKUTA


At least 13 people were injured, some seriously, when a GAZPROMAVIA Mi-171 helicopter had to make an emergency landing at Vorkuta, Russia, yesterday. The helicopter was on Domestic Service from Bovanenkovo to Vorkuta, with 22 passengers and 3 crew members onboard when the accident took place. According to Russian media reports, the helicopter fell on its side while making an emergency landing in a field in bad weather, about 2.5 miles from the Vorkuta Airport. Of those onboard, 13 people were hospitalized, with the remaining 12 being treated and released on the scene. The Mi-171 is reported to have sustained substantial damage. The Federal Air Transport Agency has announced that an investigation will commence on what caused the accident. Gazpromavia operates a fleet of airliners and helicopters, providing service within Russia.
