AVIATION/ DGCA PROBES CHECK PILOT ERROR



India's DGCA is investigating a near disaster caused by a Check Pilot onboard a JET AIRWAYS Boeing 737 in October. The incident has just come to light with the announcemend of a full investigation being opened by the DGCA. On October 20, 2009, Jet Airways Flight 332 was on Domestic Service from Delhi to Mumbai, India, with a Check Pilot onboard in the observer seat. The 737 was overhead hills at 3700 feet on approach to Mumbai in reduced visibility when the Check Pilot pulled a circuit breaker. This caused the Enhanced Ground Proximity System, as well as the engaged autopilot and flight director, to fail. The 737 entered into a descent in excess of 1000 feet, before the Captain took control and managed to land the aircraft without incident in Mumbai. In a brief statement, Jet Airways said that the aircraft never exceeded any operational parameters. The Airline reported the incident to the DGCA, and has also been conducting an internation investigation. The Check Pilot was suspended, pending the outcome of the investigation.
