A KATEKAVIA Antonov AN24 crashed last night near the Krasnoyarsk region of Siberia in north-central Russia, killing 11 of the 15 people onboard. Flight 57 was on Domestic Service from Krasnoyarsk to Igarka, Russia, with 11 passengers and 4 crew members onboard. The Antonov was on final approach into Igarka at 9:30pm, Moscow time, when it impacted the ground about 2300 feet short of the runway. The crash caused the aircraft to break up and burst into flames. Of those onboard, 10 of the 11 passengers and 1 of the 4 crew members, were killed in the crash. The survivors were all seriously injured. Officials said that the surviving passenger suffered burns over 80% of his body.
In a statement, Russia's Transport Agency said the plane was landing in adverse weather conditions. "Before landing, the plane veered to the right of its landing course and collided with the ground in front of the runway," the agency said. A West Siberian transport investigative committee said a preliminary investigation shows that a thick fog near the landing area was the cause of the accident. Meteorological data from Igarka around the time of the accident shows declining visibility and rain showers, with overcast cloud and cumulonimbus activity. Rescue workers on the scene today are reported to be focusing on finding the Antonov's black boxes. Katekavia, based in Krasnoyarsk, operates 12 An24s, but recently accepted delivery of its 1st Tupolev TU134A . It operates flights to destinations around Krasnoyarsk and served an estimated 122,000 passengers in 2009.
