MUSIC/ NUTINI AND GAGA TOP UK CHARTS: Paolo Nutini's 7 month old set, "Sunny Side Up," jumps 14 spots up to #1 on the UK album chart this week. Another long time chart holder, Lady Gaga's "The Fame" moves up 2 spots to #2 in its 51st week. The album could very well spend its 1 year anniversary in the penthouse next week. The rest of the top 20 albums basically moved up or down 1 to 2 spots, and a few other older titled crept back in during this lackluster week of sales. All of the holiday albums that were in last weeks chart have dropped out of the spotlight. Speaking of Lady Gaga, her "Bad Romance" moves back to #1 on the singles chart, where last weeks #1 "The Climb," by X-Factor winner Joe McElderry falls back to #2. Kei$ha's "Tik Tok" is the hot mover, up 6 spots to #4. The Christmas #1 by Rage Against The Machine has fallen out of the top 20.
THEATRE/ "SHREK" NO MORE: "Shrek the Musical" plays its final performance at the Broadway Theatre today, following 441 performances and 37 previews. Following a pre-Broadway engagement at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, "Shrek the Musical" opened at the Broadway Theatre on December 14, 2008. "Shrek the Musical" is "an entirely new musical" based on the story and characters from William Steig's book "Shrek!," as well as the DreamWorks Animation film of the same name. The national tour of the family-friendly musical based on the DreamWorks film and the kid-lit favorite will launch at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre for a limited engagement in July. A cast album preserves the Broadway score.
THEATRE/ "DONUTS" CLOSES SHOP TODAY: "Superior Donuts," the new play by Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy Letts ("August: Osage County"), ends its Broadway run at the Music Box Theatre today. It had been previously extended thru the end of March, but that decision was changed once ticket sales slowed down. The workplace comedy-drama about the stagnant life of a doughnut shop owner, and how it gets shaken up by a new employee, stars Michael McKean. "Superior Donuts" had its world premiere at Steppenwolf's home in Chicago in 2008 and was slightly revised before it moved to Broadway, where it was largely embraced by critics. It opened at the Music Box October 1 after previews from September 16.
