AVIATION/ UAL A319 DAMAGED ON LANDING AT NEWARK
A UNITED AIRLINES A319 suffered substantial damages in a landing incident at Newark, New Jersey, this morning. UAL Flight 634 was on Domestic Service from Chicago OHare to Newark, with 48 passengers and 5 crew members onboard, when the incident took place. According to media reports, Flight 634 departed ORD at 5:51am and was expected to land in Newark around 9:00am. At 8:54am, while on finals, the crew reported problems with extending the landing gear. The crew declared an emergency, abandoned their approach, and performed a go-around. The A319 then circled the Airport briefly at 2000 feet, before attempting a 2nd approach. At 9:27am, the aircraft landed on runway 04L with the right hand main gear retracted. The crew was able to stop the aircraft on the runway, at which time the crew ordered an evacuation via the slides. No one onboard was injured while evacuating the airliner. The runway remains closed this afternoon with officials from the NTSB & FAA on scene to commence an investigation.
