NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

WORLD/ STRONG QUAKES ROCK CHRISTCHURCH: A series of earthquakes has hit the New Zealand city of Christchurch, almost 4 months after an earthquake devastated the area and killed 181 people. The latest quakes struck just miles from the city and causing the collapse of at least 50 buildings, including several downtown, as captured in top photo. The Christchurch Cathedral, badly damaged by February's tremor, lost more of its masonry. Electricity was also hard hit with over 50000 people reported to be without power. No one was killed, however at least 40 people were injured, 2 of them seriously. The most powerful tremor, measured at magnitude 6.0 at 2:20pm, caused the evacuation of shopping centres, office blocks and the Christchurch Airport. About an hour earlier, a 5.5 tremor also struck. Dozens of aftershocks followed. The city's mayor Bob Parker warned that more tremors were likely. "It will be a restless night. It's pretty realistic to expect overnight we will have some more aftershocks," he said. With temperatures just above freezing overnight, Parker also told many Christchurch residents to prepare for a night without power. "If you don't have power and don't have water at the moment, assume you won't have them overnight," he said. Education officials say many schools will be closed on Tuesday, and the police are warning people to stay off the roads while officials check that they are safe. Prime Minister John Key said the tremors would not weaken the country's resolve to rebuild the city. "The people of Christchurch should know that all New Zealanders are thinking of them and will continue to support and stand by them at this very difficult time," he said. One European reporter who happened to be in Christchurch today, said the city's quake-weary residents are at their wit's end, and dozens more families have decided to leave for good. Since the earthquake in February, 50,000 residents have relocated elsewhere in New Zealand and Australia.

US/ NEW STUDY SHEDS LIGHT ON WHAT HOMPHOBIC MEN MIGHT WANT: The legend that is Sigmund Freud, once theorized that people often have the most hateful and negative attitudes towards things they secretly crave, but feel that they shouldn't have.If Freud is right, then perhaps men who are the most opposed to male homosexuality have particularly strong  homosexual urges for other men. According to a Psychology Today posting, one study asked heterosexal men how comfortable and anxious they are around gay men. Based on these scores, they then divided these men into 2 groups:men that are homophobic, and men who are not. These men were then shown 3 four minute videos. One video depicted straight sex, one depicted lesbian sex and one depicted gay male sex. While this was happening, a device was attached to the male participant's penises. This device has been found to be triggered by sexual arousal, but not other types of arousal, such as nervousness or fear. When viewing lesbian sex and straight sex, both the homophobic and the non-homophobic men showed increased penis circumference. For gay male sex, however, only the homophobic men showed heightened penis arousal. Heterosexual men with the most anti-gay attitudes, when asked, reported not being sexually aroused by gay male sex videos. But, their penises reported otherwise. Homophobic men were the most sexually aroused by gay male sex acts.
