MUSIC/ EXAMPLE & ARCTIC MONKEYS TOP UK CHARTS: Two new entries move into the penthouse on this week's UK singles and album charts. Example's "Changed The Way You Kissed Me" enters the singles chart at #1. Last weeks #1, "Give Me Everything" by Pitbull with Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer, moves down to #2. There is only 1 other debut in the singles top 20 and that belongs to Coldplay's "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall," which enters the chart at #6. On the album chart, the latest set by The Arctic Monkeys, "Suck It And See," debuts at #1. Last week's #1 album, Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" falls to #3, while Adele's smash hit "21," remains at #2. The debut set by Adele, "19," moves down 2 spots to #5. There are a number of other debuts in the album top 20, with "Dream With Me" by Jackie Evancho in at #4 and The Glee Cast in at #6 with "The Music Vol 6". New at #8 is the self titled set by Wonderman and new at #12 is Frank Turner with "England Keep My Bones. Finally, Iron Maiden's "From Fear To Eternity, The Best Of Iron Maiden" debuts at #19 and "Dirty Work" by All Time Low enters at #20.
FILM/ "SUPER 8" TOPS BOX OFFICE: J.J. Abrams’ "Super 8" opened to a better-than-expected $37 million at the domestic box office to claim the US crown this week. Including paid previews on Thursday, the period sci-fi pic has earned $38 million in its 1st 4 days. Overseas, "Super 8" began rolling out in a handful of markets, grossing $6.7 million for a worldwide launch of $44.7 million. The biggest territory was Australia, where the movie earned $2.7 million. "Super 8" held a comfortable lead over 20th Century Fox’s "X-Men: First Class," which grossed $25 million in its 2nd weekend for a cumulative total of $98.9 million. Overseas, "First Class" grossed $42.2 million for a cumulative total of $124.2 million and worldwdie total of $222.5 million. 2 films jumped the $200 million mark over the weekend at the domestic box office, Warner Bros. "The Hangover Part II" and Disney’s "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides". "Hangover II" grossed an estimated $18.5 million for a domestic total of $216.6 million. The comedy's international total is now $215.5 million for a worldwide total of $432.1 million, not that far behind the $467.5 million earned by the original "The Hangover". "On Stranger Tides" grossed $10.4 million domestically for a cumulative total of $208.8 million. Overseas, the 3D tentpole grossed $41.1 milion for the weekend, bringing the movie’s international total to a massive $678 million and worldwide tally to $886.8 million.
BOOKS/ MORPUGO'S "SHADOW" WINS RED HOUSE AWARD: Michael Morpurgo's novel "Shadow" has won this year's Red House children's book award, which is voted for by young readers. It is a 3rd win for Morpurgo, who becomes the only author to do so in the award's 31-year history. "Shadow" tells the story of boy who is befriended by an army sniffer dog in Afghanistan. ""Shadow" was a difficult book to write because I was writing about a contemporary conflict," Murpurgo said. He was presented with the award at a ceremony in Birmingham, England, on Saturday. His book, which is partly set at a detention centre for asylum seekers in the UK, was published last September. "I was conscious of the fact that there are families of soldiers who are fighting now in the war and dying in it," said the 67 year old author, who lives in Devon, England. "Shadow" won both the category for younger readers and the overall prize in the awards, which is co-ordinated by the Federation of Children's Book Groups. Morpurgo's previous wins were for "Kensuke's Kingdom" and "Private Peaceful". His novel "War Horse," published in 1982, has been made into a successful theatre production in the West End and on Broadway. A film version of "War Horse," directed by Steven Spielberg, is due out this Christmas. Previous winners of the award include JK Rowling.

THEATRE/ "MILLION DOLLAR" EXITS BROADWAY TODAY: The Tony Award-nominated musical "Million Dollar Quartet," about the legendary 1956 recording session that united Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, ends its Broadway run today at the Nederlander Theatre. The jukebox musical will continue to rock New York audiences when it reopens Off-Broadway in July. The musical opened on Broadway April 11, 2010, at the Nederlander Theatre following an acclaimed Chicago run, where the musical continues to play the Apollo Theater. When it closes, "Million Dollar Quartet" will have played 34 previews and 489 regular performances. The musical will launch its U.S. tour this October in Cleveland, Ohio. Open-ended productions also continue in Chicago and London. The production earned a 2010 Best Musical Tony nomination, as well as a Tony nomination for Best Book of a Musical. Original cast member Levi Kreis, who played Jerry Lee Lewis, won the Best Featured Actor in a Musical Tony Award. "Million Dollar Quartet" is among a handful of Broadway productions to transfer Off-Broadway recently. "Avenue Q" and "The 39 Steps" both made the leap Off-Broadway to extend their New York runs.
