AVIATION/ CLOSE CALL FOR WIZZAIR UKRAINE A320 IN GERMANY
The German BFU has issued a Final Factual Report into a serious incident involving a WIZZIAR UKRAINE Airbus A320 at Dortmund, Germany, on April 27, 2011. The incident had not been previously made public. On April 27, Flight 6091 was on International Service from Kiev, Ukraine, to Dortmund, Germany, with 171 passengers and 6 crew onboard. The A320 was descending through approximately 5000 feet in instrument meteorological conditions, towards the final approach fix for the approach to Dortmund's runway 24 with the intention to circle to the runway 06, when the crew received a TCAS resolution advisory to climb. The crew complied with the resolution advisory and climbed to about 5500 feet until the TCAS announced clear of conflict. The crew then continued their approach and landed without further incident on the runway 06 at Dortmund. In their Final Factual Report, the BFU said the Airbus conflicted with a private Cessna C525A Citation business jet, flying under visual flight rules. The separation between the 2 aircraft was reduced to 400 feet vertically and 0.2nm laterally. The BFU said the Airbus crew never had visual contact with the Cessna, however the Cessna Pilot did see the Airbus. The full Report, in German, which details events as they unfolded and the response of both aircraft, can be found on the BFU website.
