SPORTS/ SHACKLEFORD WINS THE PREAKNESS

Animal Kingdom's late charge was not enough as a clean run by Shackleford was enough to win the 136th running of the Preakness this afternoon at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Shackleford, trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Jesus Castanon, led most of the Derby but was caught by a group that included Animal Kingdom and finished 4th in the Derby. Many expected him to jump to an early lead in the Preakness and then fade, but he thrived running the shorter distance, though, and paid $27.20 to win. A large crowd turned out to see if Animal Kingdom, the Kentucky Derby winner, could keep the dream of the 1st Triple Crown in 33 years alive. But Animal Kingdom broke slowly and was 2nd to last as the horses separated. Jockey John Velazquez guided him to the front and urged him on down the stretch, but Animal Kingdom could not finish the run and finished 2nd. Astrology came in 3rd with Dialed In in 4th place.
