AVIATION/ ENGINE FIRE EYED IN OMEGA 707 CALIFORNIA CRASH
Investigators on the scene of the crash of OMEGA AIR REFUELING Flight 70 in California said an engine fire may be to blame for causing the Boeing 707 aircraft to crash on takeoff and burst into flames on Wednesday afternoon on a runway at the Point Mugu naval air station. The 3 crew members onboard the Boeing suffered only minor injuries as they escaped the burning fuselage, the Ventura County Fire Department said. The aircraft was loaded with 150,000 pounds of fuel. According to Omega, the tanker is used for fleet operations support and transporting fuel. The NTSB is on the scene and in charge of the investigation.
