AVIATION/ SOL SAAB SPUN OUT OF CONTROL BEFORE CRASHING

Argentina's Accident Investigation Board has released a brief statement made by a ground witness to the crash of SOL LINEAS AEREAS Flight 5428 near Los Menucos, Argentina, on Wednesday evening, May 18. According to the ground witness, the Saab 340A, registration LV-CEJ and pictured left, spun out of control, making 2 full turns, before impacting the ground and bursting into flames. All 22 passengers and crew onboard Flight 5428 were killed in the crash, which took place around 8:50pm, as the aircraft flew from Comodoro Rivadavia to Neuquen, Argentina. The crew had declared an emergency and was descending from 14000 feet due to icing at the time of the crash. Initial Reports said Argentina's National Meteorologic Service had issued a significant weather warning for the region where the Saab went down, warning of severe icing between 7000 and 18000 feet. However, new reports have surfaced today that the weather warning was not issued until after the crash, rather than before as initially reported. The black boxes were both recovered on Thursday, within hours of the crash, and are currently being analyzed.
