AVIATION/ OMEGA 707 CRASHES ON TAKEOFF IN CALIFORNIA

All 3 crew members onboard an OMEGA AERIAL REFUELING SERVICES Boeing 707 escaped with only minor injuries when the crashed on takeoff yesterday from NAS Point Mugu in California. The Boeing 707 tanker plane, registration N707MQ, skidded off a runway and burst into flames as it took off at 5:25pm. Emergency Services responded and rescued the 3 crew members, who were transported to hospital for treatment. Several firefighting agencies assisted in extinguishing the blaze from both the air and ground. The aircraft was loaded with with 150,000 pounds of fuel. The tanker is used for fleet operations support and transporting fuel. The aircraft involved in the crash, which was built in 1977, had recently tanked ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE Super Hornets during their deployment to Malaysia for Exercise Bersama Shield. The returned to the US from Cairns, Austraila, this past Monday. The NTSB has opened an investigation.
