AVIATION/ ENGINES EYED IN CAA FL731 CRASH
The head of the Honduran Directorate General of Civil Aviation, DGCA, confirmed today that both black boxes there were onboard the CENTRAL AMERICAN AIRWAYS Let 410 that crashed on approach to Tegucigalpa on Monday have been found and that they are being analyzed. The contents will be crucial in helping to determine what caused Flight 731 to crash in dense fog, killing all 14 passengers and crew onboard. It will also help to determine if the new reports of possible engine failure are true. Upon reaching the scene of the crash, local residents found the Co-Pilot still alive and he was rushed to a nearby hospital, but died on the way. According to media reports today, a policeman who was with the Co-Pilot when he died, has reported that the Co-Pilot told him that the engines had "gone out". In addition, in interviews with local residents who live next to the crash site, they reported that there was no "engine noise" prior the sound of impact. When asked about the possibility of engine failure, a lead investigator would only say that "we must await the results of investigations". Weather is also believed to have played a part in the crash. At the time the Let went down, there was dense fog and according to weather officials, winds of around 70mph. One weather official said yesterday that it was likely the aircraft encountered severe turbulence on the approach.
