AVIATION/ AA 777 & 2 USAF C17'S IN NEAR COLLISION

The US NTSB is investigating a late night near midair collision on January 20 between an AMERICAN AIRLINES Boeing 777-200 and 2 USAF C17's near New York City after an air traffic controller made an operational error. Investigators say American Flight 951, was enroute from the New York JFK to Sao Paulo, Brazil, at 10:30pm, when it converged head-on within 1 mile of the C17's, about 80 miles southeast of the Airport. "The air traffic controllers talking to each of the aircraft received conflict alerts, and immediately provided traffic advisories and turned their aircraft to resolve the conflict," said the NTSB in announcing the investigation. "In addition, the American Airlines crew responded to directions provided by the TCAS". The 2 USAF C17 cargo planes were flying in formation and were headed for McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey.
