AVIATION/ LION AIR 737 SKIDS OFF RUNWAY IN PEKANBARU

None of 213 passengers and crew onboard a LION AIR Boeing 737 were injured when the aircraft skidded off the runway at Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru, Indonesia, last evening. Flight 392 was on Domestic Service from Jakarta to Pekanbaru and approached the Airport in heavy rains, wind and lightning. According to media reports, the crew circled twice, before bringing the aircraft in for a landing. The reports said the aircraft was going too fast upon landing and when the crew attempted to turn off the runway, the 737 skidded into the overrun area. Minor damage was reported to the aircraft and it has been removed to a nearby hanger for a full damage assessment. Indonesia's National Committee for Transportation Safety announced today that they have opened an investigation into the incident. Indonesia's Transport Ministry also said today that they were grounding the Captain of Flight 392, pending the investigation. This is the 2nd runway excursion for a Lion Air aircraft in the last 3 months.
