AVIATION/ RYANAIR TOSSES 104 PAX OFF 737 AFTER MELEE

Police removed more than 100 passengers from a RYANAIR Boeing 737 preparing to leave the Canary Islands after a large scuffle broke out onboard. The disruption took place in Lanzarote onboard Ryanair Flight 8175 when Ryanair tried to charge 1 passenger extra for carryon baggage and his friends aboard the plane "mutinied". According to a media report, at least 1 Flight Attendant was pushed over during the melee. An Interior Ministry spokesman said the Pilot, who was preparing for takeoff at Guacimeta Airport for Charleroi, Belgium, then radioed for police assistance. Ryanair said in a statement that police had required the entire plane be offloaded and each passenger identified. Of the 168 passengers onboard before the melee broke out, only 64 were allowed to reboard and depart of Belgium. Most of those refused reboarding were from a group of college students on break. Some of the group were allowed on later flights to Charleroi but any individuals who engaged in disruptive behaviour or refused to follow crew instructions during the incident, were banned from the carrier. Some may even face assault charges. Ryanair said in a statement that police had required the entire plane be offloaded and each passenger identified. "Following further disruptive behaviour, the police required for security reasons that this entire group be refused travel," the statement said. Ryanair also confirmed the incident began when passengers "became disruptive and refused to comply with crew instructions" after a requirement to pay a gate bag fee "for outsized luggage".
