AVIATION/ ANOTHER LION 737 SKIDS OFF RUNWAY IN PEKANBARU
Indonesia's Transport Ministry has banned Boeing 737-900 series aircraft from landing in wet conditions at Pekanbaru following a 2nd runway excursion by a LION AIR Boeing 737-900 in as many days. Last evening, Lion Air Flight 295, arriving from Medan in drizzle, overran the wet runway and came to a stop in soft ground, pictured above. None of the 218 passengers or crew onboard were injured in this incident, however the aircraft was damaged and is currently undergoing a damage assessment. Officials said late last evening that other planes landed in the same conditions, without incident. On Monday, Lion Air Flight 392 also overran the runway while landing in heavy rain. None of the 213 passengers and crew onboard that aircraft, which suffered minor damage, were injured. The National Committee on Transportation Safety (KNKT) has opened an investigation into both incidents and the ban on Boeing 737-900s from landing in wet conditions at Pekanbaru will continue until their investigation is complete. Both flight crews from the incident aircraft have been stood down, pending the investigation results.
