AVIATION/ PAX'S DETAIL LAST MOMENTS OF MANX2 FL7100
Irish investigators have interviewed the 5 of the 6 surviving passengers of MANX2 Flight 7100, the Swearingen SA227 Metroliner that crashed in Cork, Ireland, on Thursday morning. The SW4 crashed on its 3rd attempt to land in heavy fog, killing both Pilots and 4 of the 10 passengers. According to media reports today, the survivors told investigators that they could see the ground as the jet made its 2nd and final approaches to the runway. Investigators refused to go into further detail on their statements at this time. They did also say that the air traffic controllers on duty had also been interviewed. Investigators also said that they have established that the Fairchild Metroliner’s right wing-tip hit the runway on landing, flipping the aircraft onto its roof, before it slid 190 metres along the runway, veering off to a muddy verge. Its right wing ruptured, spilling fuel onto the hot engine and sparking a fire. The cockpit suffered extensive damage, was compressed and distorted. The dead Pilots had to be removed through a hole in the bottom of the aircraft cut by emergency services. Investigators said it would appear at this stage that the aircraft was operating normally until it hit the ground. "The wing touch was early on in the sequence," The Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) deputy chief inspector said. Of the 6 survivors, 4 remain hospitalized in a Cork hospital. The other 2 passengers have been treated and released.
