AVIATION/ IRAN AIR 727 CRASHES IN ORUMIYEH

At least 72 people were killed this evening, when an IRAN AIR Boeing 727 impacted terrain while attempting to go-around in Orumiyeh, Iran. IranAir Flight 277 was on Domestic Service from Tehran to Orumiyeh, with 94 passengers and 11 crew members onboard. The 727, registration ER-IRP and pictured above, departed Tehran at 6:15pm, 2 hours behind scheduled due to poor weather in Orumiyeh. According to media reports, the aircraft was on final approach to runway 21 in fog and heavy snowfall at 7:45pm, when the accident occurred. For reasons not yet clear, the Pilots attempted to go-around, but the aircraft impacted mountainous terrain and broke up into 6 major parts at Terman Village, about 5 miles SE of the Orumiyeh Airport. Officials say that at least 72 people, including the entire crew, were killed in the crash. The survivors suffered minor to critical injuries, however an exact number of survivor has not yet been established. Officials said the death toll is expected to rise. The head of Iran's emergency service said rescue work was being made more difficult by heavy snow, which was around 27 inches deep around the crash site.
