MY CALL/ "LO:UK" & "THE EVENT"

TV SERIES: Law & Order: UK (BBC America)
CAST: Bradley Walsh, Jamie Bamber, Harriet Walter, Ben Daniels, Freema Agyeman, Bill Paterson.
RUNNING TIME: 1 hour
SYNOPSIS: A UK version of the popular and long running US "Law & Order" series. Last year, franchise creator Dick Wolf exported his decades-old format, and a few previously used "L&O" script, to England, where this "UK" version turned into a critical success. And now, the "UK" version shows up on BBC America, where it had its premiere last evening. Main actors are Bradley Walsh, Jamie Bamber and Harriet Walter are the cop, and on the legal side, Ben Daniels and Freema Agyeman. Bill Paterson, who as George Castle, is the head of the Crown Prosecution Service. The Hollywood Reporter called the show a "bloody good translation". Production has already begun on Season 2 of the series for the UK, where Season 1 just came out on DVD.
MY CALL: Great acting on what feels like a familar show, albeit with a change in location and dialect. Although things feel familar, there are enough differences, such as their polite legal system, that makes it seem like you are watching something new and refreshing. The actors are all top notch. Keep a close eye on Freema Agyeman, from "Doctor Who". The series will air on Friday evenings beginning this week.
VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

TV SERIES: THE EVENT (NBC)
CAST: Jason Ritter, Blair Underwood, Laura Innes, Sarah Roemer, Zeljko Ivanek.
RUNNING TIME: 1 hour
SYNOPSIS: "The Event" is an emotional, high-octane conspiracy thriller that follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter, "The Class"), an everyman who investigates the mysterious disappearance of his would-be fiancee Leila (Sarah Roemer, "Disturbia"), and unwittingly begins to expose the biggest cover-up in US history.
MY CALL: I have finally viewed the 1st 2 episodes of this new NBC drama and am hooked. The show is full of twists and turns as the series unwinds and as of now, its all a mystery. Such as, who are the "people" who survived the 1940s plane crash and just what do they want? Top notch acting thus far and its great to see Laura Innes, who played Carrie Weaver on "ER," back on TV. Producers say that questions will be answered as the series unwinds. They need to keep that promise otherwise viewers will depart. My only concern is the track record of NBC with chapter television, such as the dramatic and quick downfall for "Heroes". If NBC can sustain this show, they will have a hit on their hands. After finishing "Lost" this past Spring, I thought I was done with chapter television. I was until I saw "The Event," which by the way, has yet to take place.
VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
