ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

FILM/ FRANCO SHOWS A NEW SIDE OF SELF: Film star James Franco is barely recognizable on the cover of the 2nd issue of Candy Magazine. Terry Richardson shot the actor, with his hair slicked back, wearing blue eyeshadow and thick red lipstick. Candy is the "first fashion magazine ever completely dedicated to celebrating transvestism, transexuality, cross dressing and androgyny, in all its manifestations". Whew! Franco is currently starring in "Howl" and the soon to be released, and Oscar contender, "127 hours".

FILM/ EMMA STONE CONFIRMED FOR "SPIDEY": Columbia has confirmed that Emma Stone has joined the new "Spider-Man" film. The move was expected since the Internet was abuzz with Stone on the list of female finalists, then about to get an offer, then receiving an actual offer. But despite speculation that the red-headed star of "Easy A" and "Zombieland" would be playing Spider-Man's love interest Mary Jane Watson, she will be playing Gwen Stacy, a blonde. Stone will star opposite Andrew Garfield who plays Peter Parker, a.k.a. "Spider-Man," in the franchise reboot being directed by Marc Webb. The movie goes into production in December and will be released in theaters nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012.“The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice,” said Webb in a statement. According to media reports, the casting process involved looking for actresses for both characters and the studio was really into Stone, a Columbia favorite after starring in the studio's "Superbad," "The House Bunny" and "Zombieland," for both characters. But as the search elongated, Columbia decided to focus on the more important role, Stacy. Mary Jane will reportedly not appear in the 1st movie, so a Stacy storyline could give the new movie a potential extra dose of gravitas, depending on how closely the studio and filmmakers stay true to Marvel Comics. In the comics, Stacy was Parker's 1st love but died in a fight against the Green Goblin. The studio is not expected to have Green Goblin as the villain in order to distance itself from the previous trilogy.

TV/ CHO SENT PACKING ON "DWTS": Last night, Margaret Cho became the 3rd contestant eliminated on Season 11 of “DWTS,” taking her professional partner, Louis van Amstel, out of the competition too. Cho had been near the bottom of the leaderboard since the season began. “I thought the judges were really hard on me, but I think you were hard on me because you could see that I am a dancer, for real,” Cho told the panel – Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli — after learning the news. “And I thank you for that. I will take that with me forever. Thank you so much.” Earlier in the season, Cho revealed that she had loved to dance as a child, but quit when someone called her a "fat ballerina". "Thank you for the opportunity to let me dance," she said. "I'm going to keep dancing". Cho's elimination came the night after she earned the lowest score on the leaderboard, an 18 out of 30 for her samba, and made a statement about the recent tragic deaths of several gay teens. “Our story is serious because we want to celebrate pride, we want to show ourselves off. It’s a tough time for the gay community. A lot of gay teenagers have committed suicide, so we want this to end now,” Cho said on Monday night’s show after her dance.

THEATRE/ "SISTER ACT" NAILS DOWN BROADWAY RUN: The Broadway production of Alan Menken's disco musical "Sister Act," which will be directed by Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, will officially open April 20, 2011, at the Broadway Theatre. THEATRE/ "RAIN" BOOKS 12 WEEK RUN: The British invasion will last an additional week on Broadway as "Rain – A Tribute to The Beatles on Broadway" has extended its limited run at the Neil Simon Theatre through January 9, 2011. The popular touring production will play a 12-week Broadway engagement beginning October 19 at the Neil Simon. An official opening has been set for October 26. In "Rain," vocalists, musicians and entertainers Joey Curatolo, Joe Bithorn, Ralph Castelli, Steve Landes and Mark Beyer perform the Beatles' hits live on stage and recreate the numerous iconic looks made famous by the rock band. Curatolo, Bithorn, Castelli and Landes all appeared in the touring productions of "Beatlemania". According to producers, "From the early days of their appearance on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' in 1964 through Sgt. Pepper and on to the Abbey Road years, "Rain" performs it all. The multi-media concert recaptures the era through all phases of The Beatles astounding musical career including Shea Stadium, the psychedelic late 60s and The Beatles long-haired hippie, hard-rocking rooftop days. A fusion of historical footage and hilarious television commercials lights up video screens and live cameras zoom in for close-ups."

THEATRE/ STARS EXTEND "NIGHT MUSIC" RUN: Tony, Grammy and Golden Globe Award winner Bernadette Peters and Tony and Emmy Award winner Elaine Stritch have extended their stay in the Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's "A Little Night Music". Originally scheduled to perform through November 7 at the Walter Kerr Theatre, the acclaimed actresses will stay with the production through its closing on January 9, 2011. At that time, the production will have played a total of 20 previews and 425 regular performances. Trevor Nunn directed the hauntingly spare revival of "A Little Night Music," which originated at London's Menier Chocolate Factory last year prior to arriving on Broadway November 24, 2009. "Night Music" officially opened December 13 at the Walter Kerr.
