MUSIC/ ZACH QUINTO TAKES ON 50 CENT: Zachary Quinto, formerly of NBC drama "Heroes," sent out the Tweet above yesterday, in response to rapper 50 Cent's antigay tweet this week. Meanwhile, 50 Cent sent out numerous tweets yesterday saying it was all a misunderstanding of a joke. He went on to Tweet: "Some how they turned a simple joke about oral sex into a anti gay statement. I have nothing against people who choose and alternative life". His excuses have done little to stem the outrage over his original remarks.
MUSIC/ REM TOPS MENS CRYING SONGS POLL: REM's "Everybody Hurts" has topped a UK poll of songs that make men cry the most. According to the survey by PRS for Music, the group's 1993 single came top of the list, followed by Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" and Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". At #4 was "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor, followed by "With or Without You" by U2, "The Drugs Don't Work" by The Verve and "Candle in the Wind" by Elton John. "A well-written tear-jerker is one that people can relate to and empathize with," Ellis Rich, PRS for Music's chairman said in a statement. "It is this lyrical connection that can reach deep down emotionally and move even the strongest of men." Rounding out the top 10 was Bruce Springsteen at #8 with "Streets of Philadelphia," followed by "Unchained Melody" by Todd Duncan and "Angels" by Robbie Williams at #10. Earlier this year, "Everybody Hurts" was chosen by Simon Cowell as a charity single to raise money for the Haiti earthquake appeal.
TV/ ABC CANCELS "GENERATION": ABC has canceled its documentary-style ensemble drama "My Generation" after only 2 episodes. The network is halting production on the Thursday night drama series. The network has not yet said what will take its place as the lead in for "Grey's Anatomy". After a poor premiere week opening, "My Generation" fell 31% for its 2nd episode this week, to 3.9 million viewers and a 1.1 adults 18-49 rating. The network's other struggling drama, Wednesday night legal series "The Whole Truth," is going to get a 3rd week at bat. "My Generation" is the 2nd network series to get the axe this week, the 1st was Fox's "Lone Star." In addition to "Whole Truth," NBC's Friday night drama "Outlaw" is also in danger of cancellation.
MEDIA/ CNN FIRES SANCHEZ OVER REMARKS: CNN issued a statement late yesterday announcing that anchor Rick Sanchez has been let go from the network after giving a radio interview in which he insinuated Jon Stewart was a bigot and CNN was "run by Jews." “Rick Sanchez is no longer with the company," the statement read. "We thank Rick for his years of service and we wish him well.“ Sanchez let loose on "The Daily Show's" Stewart while appearing on the " Stand Up! with Pete Dominick" SiriusXM radio show yesterday morning. Sanchez, who is Cuban American, repeatedly suggested that he had experienced subtle forms of racism in his television career. At first, Sanchez called Stewart a “bigot,” but later took the word back, calling the comedian “prejudicial” instead. Prejudicial “against who?” Dominick asked. Sanchez said, “Against anybody who doesn’t agree to his point of view, which is very much a white liberal establishment point of view.” One of the co-hosts of the radio show brought up the fact that Stewart is a Jew, saying to Sanchez, he is a minority “as much as you are.” Sanchez answered sarcastically, “Yeah. Yeah. Very powerless people.” He let out a high-pitched laugh.“Everybody that runs CNN is a lot like Stewart,” Sanchez said. A rep for Stewart had no comment. An insider says he may discuss this on "The Daily Show" on Monday.
