AVIATION/ FIRST CLASS FLIGHT TO NEW HOME
For the past 6 months, Miggs the boxer has been a resident of Lafayette's Almost Home Humane Society in Indiana. After battling several medical conditions and making her way into the hearts of the Almost Home staff, the 2-year-old dog took her 1st plane ride Sunday to get to her new home in Ohio. "We usually drive dogs and do transfers from car to car when going long distances, so this is the 1st time we've ever had one flown out," said the outreach coordinator for Almost Home. Miggs "came to us in April as a stray, so that's a really long time to be kenneled. She should be excited to be on the way to her new home." Miggs was able to make her trip thanks to Pilots N Paws, an organization comprised volunteer of Pilots and plane owners who transport animals. Pilot Bill Zink and his wife, Sarah, provided first-class accommodations for Miggs. The couple said they began working with Pilots N Paws about 1.5 years ago. "This is probably our 8th or 9th trip this year," said Bill Zink. "I'm just a volunteer Pilot who wanted to do something to help these animals. This trip will probably be about 1.5 hours. You don't want to fly too long, and you want to keep the health of the animal in mind." Miggs moved to the Go Boxer Rescue in Dayton, Ohio, and will stay there until she finds her permanent home. Since coming to Almost Home last spring, Miggs has been treated for a growth on one of her front paws, a few scrapes and an eye ulcer that led to a chronic eye condition. Go Boxer Rescue is better suited to help Miggs recover, and meet all of her medical needs. So far this year, Almost Home has placed 28 animals with rescue groups. Although everyone at Almost Home was happy to see Miggs out of the kennel, the outreach coordinator said she will not be forgotten. "Since she has been there so long, a lot of the staff really got attached to her," she said. "They are going to miss her."
