WORLD NEWS/ IGOR LASHING BERMUDA
A weakened Hurricane Igor has begun lashing Bermuda. The hurricane's eyewall collapsed earlier, weakening Igor into a large but still dangerous Category 1 hurricane with 85mph winds. Winds in Bermuda are rising, and exceeded Tropical Storm-force for the first time at 9:5 am this morning. Bermuda radar shows the island is experiencing heavy rain and high winds. Hurricane Warnings are in effect for the island and the center of Igor is expected to pass late tonight or early tomorrow morning. Buildings in Bermuda are some of the best-constructed in the world, and are generally located at higher elevations out of storm surge zones; thus damage on the island may be limited. Hurricane Igor is currently located 115 miles SW of Bermuda and is moving N at 16mph. Winds are at 85mph, with gusts to 105mph. Elsewhere in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Julia is being torn apart by wind shear from Igor and will dissipate either tomorrow or Tuesday. Invest 94L, a few hundred miles W of the Cape Verde Islands, could develop into a Tropical Depression by Tuesday. And in Asia, Typhoon Fanapi moved thru Taiwan today as a Category 3 Typhoon with top winds of 120mph. At least 3 people have reportedly been killed and heavy rains are reported thru-out the country. Fanapi is now in the Taiwan Strait between the island and mainland China. Fanapi is expected to hit China about 150 miles E/NE of Hong Kong tomorrow, as a Category 1 typhoon.
