AVIATION/ UAE GCAA UPDATES ON UPS FL6

The United Arab Emirates GCAA has issued a brief update on their investigation into the crash of UPS Flight 6 at Dubai, on September 3, 2010. Both Pilots onboard the Boeing 747 were killed while attempting to make an emergency return to the Dubai Airport after a cargo fire broke out, shortly after departure. In their update, the GCAA said that data from both the CVR and FDR have been downloaded successfully and analysis is currently taking place. The agency said they are focussing on the cargo the aircraft was carrying and the associated risks with that cargo. The GCAA said that Flight 6 had just reached the top of climb at 7:12pm, when the crew received a main deck fire warning. The crew began to work their checklists and requested diversion to the nearest Airport from ATC in Bahrain. The crew was offered to divert to Doha, but instead decided to return to Dubai. As time went on, more fire warnings were received from the main and lower cargo decks. There is evidence that the crew had difficulty seeing their instruments due to heavy and thick smoke in the cockpit. There is also evidence that there were communication difficulties between Flight 6 and ATC. The 747 overflew Dubai's runway at 4000 feet and entered into a right hand turn. 5 minutes later, ATC notified Emergency Services that an airliner had gone down. The investigation continues.
