AVIATION/ ALROSA TO ATTEMPT TUPOLEV RECOVERY
Russian Pilots are planning to make a risky attempt at recovering and flying an ALROSA MIRNY Tupolev TU154 that made a miraculous emergency landing in Siberia earlier this month. "A technical team will give its advice then the final decision will be taken by the constructor Tupolev, but we are counting on continuing to use this plane," an official from Alrosa said. Flight 514, on Domestic Service from Polyarny to Moscow, Russia, with 72 passengers and 9 crew members onboard, was forced to make an emergency landing on September 7 at a deserted runway in Russia's far northern Komi region, 1500km from Moscow, after it suffered a mid-flight power failure. Nobody was hurt in the landing or evacuation, which the Pilots madewith no working navigation gear and at high speed. The Tupolev overshot the runway by several hundred metres, and pictures this week on Russian TV showed teams cutting trees and hauling the plane out using bulldozers. The plane only suffered minor damage in the landing, though the 3engines will be replaced before the flight is attempted. .All unnecessary weight will also be shed to assist in the takeoff from the short runway, which is about 1/2 the length required for this type of aircraft.
