AVIATION/ RUSSIA UPDATES ON ALROSA FL514
Russia's Ministry of Transport has released a brief update on the incident involving an ALROSA MIRNY Tupolev TU154M on September 7, 2010. Alrosa Flight 514 was on Domestic Service from Polyarny to Moscow, Russia, with 72 passengers and 9 crew members onboard. While enroute at 34700 feet, the Tupolev suffered a complete loss of electrics. The crew was able to put the Tupolev down on an abandoned runway at Izhma, Russia. The aircraft did overrun the runway and came to a rest in a field. All passengers and crew were evacuated without injury, however the Tupolev suffered substantial damages in the incident. In their update, the Ministry said that initial examinations suggest that the onboard batteries overheated and then failed, taking out the entire electrics system. This caused the failure of all attached systems, including navigation and radio equipment. It also caused the failure of fuel pumps, followed by a fuel imbalance in the wings. The crew performed 2 low approaches to the abandoned runway they had spotted from the air, before making a high speed landing without flaps and slats, which had been affected by the electrics failure. The batteries have been sent to a special lab for examination. The Ministry also said that they had met the crew of Flight 514 and thanked them for their "heroic, decisive and professional actions," which saved everyone onboard. The investigation continues.
