An ATR42 operated by the state owned and opearted CONVIASA has crashed today in Venezuela.
At least 33 people have survived the crash of a CONVIASA ATR42 in Southeastern Venezuela today. Flight 2351 was on Domestic Service from Porlamar on Isla Margarita to Puerto Odaz with 43 passengers and 4 crew members onboard. According to media reports, the ATR was about 30 miles from Puerto Odaz when the crew declared an emergency reporting technical problems. Shortly thereafter, they reported that they were also having trouble controlling the aircraft.
Moments later, the ATR42, registration YV-1010, went down about 6 miles from the Puerto Odaz Airport in an industrial park owned by the state-run Sidor steel foundry. Ground witnesses said they saw saw the plane tumble into some power lines, or actually became entangled in the power lines, before hitting the ground and exploding. According to media reports, 14 people were killed in the crash and 33 survived. The survivors were all transported to area hospitals with various degree of injuries reported. One unconfirmed report said that all 4 crew members had survived. Venezuelan aviation officials have opened an investigation.
