AVIATION/ NTSB UPDATES ON UNITED FL634

The NTSB has issued a brief update on an incident involving a UNITED AIRLINES A319 at Newark, New Jersey, on January 10, 2010. On that date, Flight 634 was on Domestic Service from Chicago OHare to Newark, with 48 passengers and 5 crew members onboard. The crew aborted their approach into Newark due to an unsafe gear indication for the right hand main gear. After circling to troubleshoot, the crew brought the aircraft in for a landing without the right hand main gear being locked. The A319 was settled onto the runway on its left hand main and nose gear, along with the right hand engine sending sparks down the runway. Smoke was observed after the aircraft came to a complete stop, thus the Captain ordered an evacuation. 3 passengers received very minor injuries in the evacuation. The aircraft suffered substantial damages in the incident. In their brief update, the NTSB said that the right hand main gear partially extended, but could not be fully extended and locked, despite manual attempts to do so. The crew decided to bring the A319 in for a landing due to the fact they were running low on fuel. The investigation continues.
