AVIATION/ GEAR COLLAPSES ON ACG 747

An AIR CARGO GERMANY Boeing 747 suffered substantial damages last evening in Hong Kong when its left hand main gear collapsed while preparing to takeoff. ACG Flight 8732 was on International Cargo Service from Hong Kong to Karaganda, Kazakhstan and was turning on to runway 25L for departure, when the left hand main gear collapsed. No one onboard was injured. The incident took place at 6:00pm, local time, and blocked 1 of 2 runways at Chek Lap Kok Airport. The runway was shut down for about 10 hours, which led to 195 delays or cancellations for other carriers, including many for CATHAY PACIFIC. In a statement, ACG said that the left hand main gear buckled, which caused the left hand wing and engine to hang down, without contacting the ground. ACG said the delays were caused by the 747 needing to be unloaded and fuel removed before it could be towed off the runway. The carrier said the aircraft has just been acquired from MARTIN AIR 14 days ago and had been fitted with new landing gear 6 weeks ago. The incident is under investigation by Hong Kong aviation officials.
