AVIATION/ BFU UPDATES ON LUFTHANSA CARGO FL8460

The German BFU has released a brief update on their investigation into the crash of LUFTHANSA CARGO Flight 8460 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on July 27, 2010. The BFU said that the MD11 freighter which crashed and burned on landingi in Riyadh, made 3 heavy contacts with the runway. The aircraft hit runway 33L with a vertical impact of about 2g, before lifting off again. This was followed by a 2nd contact of 3g and another at 4.3g before the tail structure behind the main landing-gear failed. The MD11F then veered off the left side of the runway about 7900ft after the initial touchdown and careered for a further 375m in the sand before coming to a halt. The 2 Pilots onboard Flight 8460 both survived the crash, and escaped the burning airliner. One of the Pilots sustained serious injuries, while the other Pilot only had minor injuries. The BFU update does not state when the fire actually began. There are numerous reports that the MD11 was on fire as it approached Riyadh, but this has been in dispute since the day of the crash. Flight 8460 was arriving from Frankfurt, Germany, with 80 tons of cargo onboard, when the accident took place. The investigation continues.
