WORLD NEWS/ LONDON POLICE WARN OF ATTACK
According to a report in The Times, the British police have warned businesses in London to expect a Mumbai-style terrorist attack on the capital. "Mumbai is coming to London," the paper quoted a senior detective from the Metropolitan police counter-terrorism command as saying. In November 2008, a "commando-style" raid by 10 gunmen on hotels and cafes in the Indian city of Mumbai killed 174 people and injured more than 300 over 3 days. According to The Times, the detective said at a briefing in London 12 days ago that companies should anticipate a shooting and hostage-taking raid "involving a small number of gunmen with handguns and improvised explosive devices". A terrorist cell may be preparing an attack on London early next year, the paper said, referring to a police assessment. According to the paper, security sources said concerns had been raised by "chatter" on a prominent jihadist website 2 weeks ago. The Metropolitan police issued the warning on a possible terrorist attack through its network of security forums, which supply business leaders, local government and the emergency services with counter-terrorism advice.
