MEDIA/ TIME NAMES BEST MAG COVERS OF THE YEAR: Time Magazine has released its annual top 10 lists of the year, and this years top 10 magazine covers has a couple of interesting winners. First up is the #1 cover of the year, the February 22, 2009, issue of New York. The cover features Bernie Madoff, which wickedly played off Heath Ledger's Joker from "The Dark Knight". Also of note, is the June 7, 2009, issue of The Advocate, which came in at #7. This clever and hilarious cover either pays homage to the famous painting "The Scream" by Edvard Munch. The article it sells is about how the recession has affected the porn industry. The photo suggests, among other things, that if it gets bad enough, movie producers may have to substitute blow-up dolls for flesh-and-blood actors. According to Time, the cover pushes the boundaries of taste, but not for its target audience.
MUSIC/ BOFFO SALES CONTINUE FOR BOYLE: Susan Boyle has held on to the top of the US Billboard album chart for a 2nd week after selling a further 527,000 copies of her debut album. The Scottish singer is likely to retain her chart position for a further week, based on current sales. According to Billboard, those sales puts Boyle's album on course to secure the best-selling US album of the year. Boyle must beat current front-runner Taylor Swift, whose album "Fearless" has sold 2.5 million copies to date. There are 4 weeks left to run in the 2009 album chart, and analysts predict Boyle will be able to outsell country star Swift. In her 1st week of release in the US, the singer shifted more than 700,000 copies of "I Dreamed A Dream". Next week it is likely to sell a further 600,000 copies and claim a 3rd week at #1. Albums released late in the year have previously overtaken established big sellers in the US, including Josh Groban's 2007 release "Noel," which sold 3.7 million copies and became the year's best-selling album. Meanwhile in the UK, Boyle's record remains the bookmakers' favourite to claim the Christmas #1 slot. According to Ladbrokes, her odds currently stand at 1/14, ahead of Leona Lewis at 5/1 and Westlife with odds of 12/1.
