AVIATION/ TURBULENCE INJURES 20 ON EMIRATES A330

At least 20 people were injured on Saturday, December 19, after an EMIRATES A330 encountered severe turbulence near Durban, South Africa. Flight 775 was on International Service from Dubai, UAE, to Durban, when the incident took place. At 1:30pm, about 2 hours prior to their scheduled landing in Durban, the A330 encountered the turbulence. It is believed that turbulence had been forecast, as the seatbelt sign was reportedly turned on just prior to the incident. According to media reports, the the jet plunged when it encountered the turbulence, which went on to last for several minutes. During the turbulence, both Flight Attendants and standing passengers were thrown to the ceiling and/or floor, while trolleys and bags were also thrown about the cabin. A doctor onboard began treating the injured, and the A330 continued on to Durban, where it landed and was met by Emergency Services. South African media report that 4 passengers and 5 Flight Attendants were transported to hospital, while another 11 were treated and released at the scene. None of the injuries was considered life threatening. Trauma counseling was also offered to all of those onboard. Post flight inspection revealed minor damage in the passenger cabin to ceiling panels and armrests at 8 seats. The damage was repaired and after inspection, the aircraft was released to return to service later the same day. Both South African aviation officials and Emirates are investigating the incident.
