*HAWAIIAN AIRLINES and its unionized Pilots said they have reached a tentative agreement on a new 5 year contract that would provide increased compensation for Hawaiian's Pilots as well as operational improvements for the company. The tentative agreement with followed more than 2 years of contracts and a strike authorization vote by the Pilots, who are represented by the Airline Pilots Association. The tentative agreement covers 418 Pilots at Hawaiian. The agreement is subject to ratification by union members, who are expected to vote on the proposal in the coming weeks.
*2 male passengers were arrested earlier this week in Sydney, Australia, after an incident of "baggage rage" onboard a SINGAPORE AIRLINES aircraft. According to media reports, just prior to Flight 219 departing Singapore's Changi Airport on Tuesday December 15, the 2 men began to fight over baggage going into an overhead bin. 1 of the men punched the other in the face. Cabin crew seperated the 2 men, re-seating the victim in another section of the airliner. Flight 219 then departed Singapore, and upon arrival in Sydney, 5 Australian Federal Police officers were waiting for the flight. Both men were arrested, however it is believed that the man who threw the punch is the only one facing charges. It is not known what prompted the crew to request that Police meet the aircraft.
*An AMERICAN AIRLINES airliner was delayed in Austin, Texas, due to a bomb threat, yesterday, December 18. Flight 2486 was on Domestic Service from Austin to Chicago OHare with 129 passengers and an unknown number of crew members onboard. At 1:50pm, while preparing to depart, a passenger found a note in a lavatory that suggested a bomb was onboard. The tower was notified and the airliner was moved to the remote SW section of the Airport, as seen in photo above. The 129 passengers were taken off the plane, re-screened and questioned by police and the FBI while police used dogs to search the plane and baggage. The aircraft itself was also swept. No bomb was found, and the airliner was allowed to depart for OHare around 6:00pm. The FBI continues its investigation into the incident.
*A VLADIVOSTOK AVIA Tupolev TU154M had to make an emergency return to Vladivostok, Russia, yesterday, December 18. Flight 743, on International Service to Seoul, South Korean, declared an emergency shortly after departure with the crew reporting that they were unable to retract the flaps. The Tupolev landed back at Vladivostok without incident, and was removed from service for inspection and repairs.
*An IBC AIRWAYS Saab 340 had to make an emergency landing at Grand Cayman, on Thursday, December 17. Flight 211 was on Cargo Service from Miami, Florida, to Grand Cayman, with 2 crew members onboard. The crew declared an emergency while on approach to Grand Cayman, reporting that they had to shut an engine down for unspecified reasons. The Saab landed without incident about 30 minutes later and was then removed from service for inspection and repairs.
