AVIATION/ SECURITY THREATS DIVERT 2 U.S. AIRLINERS
Security concerns forced 2 US passenger flights to be diverted today, but both planes landed safely and eventually flew to their final destinations. In the 1st incident, CONTINENTAL AIRLINES Flight 546, a Boeing 737 on Domestic Service from Houston, Texas, to Chicago OHare, had to make an emergency diversion to St Louis, Missouri, after a man attempted to open a cabin door near the front of the plane while enroute. Responding to screams from a Flight Attendant, the man was reportedly accosted by an Federal Air Marshall onboard, who restrained him. The man was taken into police custody, no charges have yet been filed. After about an hour on the ground, Flight 546 departed for OHare, where it landed without incident. In the 2nd incident, DELTA AIRLINES Flight 1706, a Boeing 737 on Domestic Service from Detroit, Michigan, to San Diego, California, had to make an emergency diversion to Albuquerque, New Mexico, after a handwritten bomb threat was found in a passenger lavatory. The 737 landed safely about 40 minutes after requesting diversion. The aircraft taxied to a remote stand and was met by Emergency Services and law enforement, pictured above. 107 passengers and 6 crew members were offloaded and a search of the passengers, crew, aircraft, luggage and cargo, failed to find any explosives. The aircraft was cleared to depart this afternoon for San Diego. The FBI and TSA are investigating the Delta incident.
